چکیده

Rabbit lenses incubated in vitro in potassium-free Tyrode's solution for 4 hours accinnulated trace amounts of Rb-86 to a concentration averaging 18 times that of the incubation medium. The uptake of Rb-86 was temperature dependent and required calcium. In the presence of glucose it was inhibited by iodoacetate, ouabain, or digoxin, but not by dinitrophenol, fluoroacetate, or anaerobiosis. The accumulation ivas inhibited competitively by potassium ion, and saturation kinetics with nonlabeled rubidium could be demonstrated. In the absence of glucose the accumulation was reduced, required oxygen, and was much more sensitive to cyanide, dinitrophenol, and fluoroacetate.

Distribution of rubidium-86 accumulated in the rabbit lens.

he in vitro accumulation of rubidium86 has provided a simple and convenient method for evaluating cation transport by the rabbit lens. The accumulation of rubidium occurred against a concentration gradient, was temperature dependent, demonstrated saturation kinetics, and was inhibited "competitively" by potassium. The accumulation was also inhibited by ouabain in concentrations as low as 10~ M....

The efflux of rubidium from the rabbit lens

Rabbit lenses which had accumulated Rb were incubated in a medium containing sufficient nonlabeled rubidium (33 mM.) to saturate the carrier or concentrations of ouabain (10-*M) which inhibited the transport system. The rate of runout of Rb so determined could be increased by reducing the concentration of calcium in the medium or by the addition of such metabolic inhibitors as iodoacetate, fluo...

Assessment of the Lens Anterior–Posterior Diameter as Compared with the Eye Globe by Ultrasonography in Rabbit

Objective- Assessment of the lens anterior – posterior (AP) diameter as compared with the eye globe by ultrasonography in rabbit.   Design- Descriptive study.   Animals- 120 male and female rabbits, two months to four years old, and weighting between 300 to 1500gr.   Procedures- 2D ultrasonography of the eyes was performed and AP diameter of the eyes and lens were measured using Sonosite Tit...

The accumulation of myoinositol and rubidium ions in galactose-exposed rat lens.

When rat lens is incubated in 30 mM galactose overnight, the extent of accumulation of rubidium ions (Rb) and myoinositol (MI) are affected, as well as the Na-K ATPase activity. Rb accumulation and Na-K ATPase activity are only slightly affected compared to the dramatic drop in MI accumulation. These changes are completely abolished by sorbinil, which blocks polyol formation, or by rendering th...

Study of Lens Metabolism in Vivo; Technique and Results with Na-24, Rb-86, and P-32.

A technique for studying lens metabolism by anterior chamber perfusion in vivo is presented. A particular advantage of this technique is that the lens epithelium delineated by the pupillary space is the only portion of the lens surface exposed to the perfusate, thereby providing in vivo isolation of this area. The uptake of P-32-labeled inorganic phosphate, Na-24, and Rb-86 by the lens was inve...
